In February 2006, with funding from the Skillman Foundation and Carls Foundation, the Family Life Center (FLC) opened its doors to families in northeast Wayne County experiencing chronic unemployment and in desperate need of family wraparound support services.  Since its opening, FLC services include:

  •  Children’s Corner, a drop off day care center focusing on early childhood education

  • Tuesday Tutoring Reading Clinics serving 61 families Family Fun Nights

  • a computer lab donated by IBM

  • a free literacy summer day camp called CAMP L.I.F.E.

  • individual and family counseling

  • and a host of other services.

“Rockin’ for Reading” Fundraiser Raises $64,675!

Over 200 corporate and community leaders rocked to the tunes of Motown with the world renowned Miracles, on Friday, April 27, 2007 at the GM Wintergarden, Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit.   Under the leadership of NEGC’s Board Member, Anthony Adams and his wife, the honorable Deborah Ross Adams, State of Michigan, Third Circuit Court the Second “Rockin’ for Reading” Literacy and Family Support Gala raised more than $64,675. The proceeds will be used to fund the Children’s Corner, Family Resource Center and multi-generational literacy program  located in the Samaritan Center in northeast Detroit.

The gala also featured a silent auction with over 100 items and packages and dinner by Andiamo Restaurant.  William Luse, District Manager, IBM’s Detroit area office was presented the corporate award for its donation of computers and assistance to the families at the Family Life Center.  Dr. Daphne Ntiri, a NEGC board member, was also presented an award  for her outstanding support of literacy programs in the City of Detroit. NEGC’s tutors received Spirit of Detroit Awards from the Detroit City Council;  Renita Cain, Richard Ervin and DeAndre Ford.
